Overview: Methods of removing grass cuttings or leaves from behind a mower.
In recent years the leaf/grass bagger has been offered to the homeowner by most
mower manufacturers.
Characteristics
of the typical bagger system are:
* When
stored they occupy considerable space.
* The
installation process requires considerable upper body strength to handle the
weight and awkward geometry of the device.
* Once
installed they are not easily removed to expose the draw bar so that the
tractor can be used for other purposes.
* They are
so small that it takes very little mowing or leaf vacuum travel to fill up the
bags.
* To empty
the bags one must dismount the mower, lift the heavy bags out of their sockets,
empty and replace them in the rack. Then remount the mower, restart the engine,
and proceed back to the place the mower just left in order to proceed down
another small run until the bags are once again filled.
Summary:
The bagger
system is long overdue for a serious overhauling. They are overweight, designed
with little or no sophistication, and require a gorilla to install and operate.
LeafBoss
functions and features:
* LeafBoss
is designed to overcome most, if not all, of the points covered in the
paragraph above.
* LeafBoss
can be shipped UPS in a container of approximately 38” x 36” x 6” and weighs
about 55 lbs. This does not include a grass chute to carry the grass from the
mower deck to LeafBoss. Each manufacturer has different measurements and
specifications for this item.
*
Installation can be completed in less than 10 minutes, including time for
reading the directions, by the average person.
* LeafBoss
can be removed for temporary or seasonal storage in the same 10-minute period
described above.
* It can
even be stored in the original shipping container or hung flat against the wall
on a couple of nails, a shelf bracket or the like.
* LeafBoss
holds many times the volume of the average bagger. One can cover 4 or 5 times
the ground before the LeafBoss is full enough to require emptying.
* To empty
LeafBoss one only has to drive to the dump site, pull a lever and pull forward.
LeafBoss dumps the contents in a pile. One can put down a sheet of plastic,
drive the mower on to the sheet and dump the clippings on the sheet. By tying
up the four corners of the sheet one has a bag, which can be used to dispose of
the clippings. In any case one never has to dismount the mower.
Summary:
When
looking at this product it is obvious that some capital spent in mass-producing
composite components would be an improvement. At present the flat planes of the
product are made of MDO plywood, hinges are stainless piano hinge, etc. This
was done to simplify the product for limited production and to prove its
efficacy. These have been in operation now for 2 seasons and the prototype is
still being used by the inventor as an everyday device.
